WHO ARE WE

With a vision of empowering young people from low socio-economic and challenging backgrounds, the idea of Shadow to Shine was birthed by Becky Fatemi in 2017.

Upon learning that they both shared dreams of making a meaningful impact on the lives of young people, Becky Fatemi and Korinna Williams joined forces in 2019 to develop Shadow To Shine.

Korinna now heads the initiative, responsible for all operations and the strategic development with Becky as Director, utilising her network and industry contacts to help the organisation grow.

Shadow To Shine continues to grow, determined to create opportunities for those who would otherwise be denied.

Originally from Iran, Becky Fatemi arrived in the UK aged 3, where she experienced the many obstacles of her immigrant background.

From a young age Becky had a strong passion for hip hop, at 15 she worked as part of a street promotions team for Sony Music and any company that would have her.

Her teenage years also presented times of hanging out with the wrong crowd and following dangerous paths, however her course was changed, not too long before a chance encounter with Puff Daddy whilst working in events during university.

This meeting would lead to the beginning of Becky’s career in events, where she coordinated events on a large scale for the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, Beyonce and Rhianna.

Her passion in events provided an ethos she would take into retail and sales, where Becky went onto to become Sales Director for Foxtons, one of the UK’s leading estate agency businesses. Winning many accolades, some still unbeaten to this day, the combination of her celebrity management and property experience lead to Becky establishing her Rokstone brand and business.

Becky Fatemi and her all-female team - featuring a diverse range of backgrounds and women of colour - are currently the only all female company specialising in the sale of super-prime properties in central London.

Becky is mortified that in this day and age, she is the only woman sole owner of such a company in one of the most prominent cities of the world. And this drivers her to change the face of corporate responsibility for inclusion and diversity in the workforce.

Through our own struggles and observations, Becky felt there needed to be an initiative that helped mentor up and coming talent from underprivileged backgrounds, and so the concept for Shadow To Shine was born.

Born in Manchester, Korinna Williams grew up in an area of poverty and high crime, with little to no money or aspiration.

Born in Manchester, Korinna Williams grew up in an area of poverty and high crime, with little to no money or aspiration.

Despite this Korinna possessed a strong love for the creative arts, from music to dance to art. However while more of a critical and analytical thinker rather than a natural born creative, Korinna noticed that a lot of creative talent didn’t necessarily have the business mind needed for their growth, Korinna started her company ‘Hype & Genius’.

Providing essential help for local creative talent, the site provided navigation and information of the business landscape, a platform for free promotion, informative reviews and interviews, as well as general posts about lifestyle and culture.

Over time Hype & Genius grew to become a team of 7, gaining a following on social media with regular site visits. And when the website was temporarily on hold during Korinna’s university studies, she remained active in the UK underground scene, providing much needed PR and support to multiple creatives.

At university Korinna studied Economics, Politics and Public Policy and went on to study Cultural Astronomy & Astrology at a masters level, influenced by her other interests in the origins of philosophy, anthropology and belief systems. She later graduated and worked in project management.

Bringing forward the leadership & management learnt in her professional life, alongside the theoretical skills in her university course, combined with the experience of ‘Hype & Genius’, it made sense that Korinna’s path would lead to Shadow To Shine.

On meeting Becky, Korinna was inundated with job offers but felt that Shadow to Shine was the only initiative she wanted to work with as she could see the immediate impact of her efforts. In just one week, Korinna could see that companies could change a life and therefore, she felt Shadow to Shine was the most meaningful use of her skills.

Looking back on her progress, Korinna became passionate about social justice & equality, believing that factors such as race and background should not prevent your dreams and aspirations.

In Loving Memory
